Although Bologna fielded an all-attack line-up it was the home side that dominated the early play. Christian Amoroso, Roberto Baronio and Adriano went close, but when Bologna did get forward they were extremely dangerous. Julio Cruz struck on the break and although his angled drive beat the 'keeper, it did not get past the far post.
The deadlock was eventually broken in first half stoppage time. Gianluca Pagliuca did well to parry Adriano's header from a corner, but Ezequiel Gonzales turned in the loose ball from close range.
There was a scare for Bologna at the dawn of the second period as Giulio Falcone was stretchered off with a neck brace following a nasty fall. The defender was taken to hospital for further tests.
Poor defending has been Fiorentina's curse this season and on the hour mark Julio Cruz was allowed room to control a cross and turn in from close range.
