Parma - Bologna

20th day ~ Parma - Bologna : 2-1

Parma have succeeded in winning back the fans with this local derby against the club that this season is doing far better than their wealthier and more prestigious neighbours. However, two early errors on set-pieces cost Bologna dearly in what was overall a relatively even match.

As with most derbies this was an eventful and fast-paced encounter. Bologna had the best start but it was Parma who took the lead with their first shot on goal. Fabio Cannavaro rose to meet a corner kick and his header took a decisive deflection off Carlo Nervo.

Just moments later another cross floated in from the corner flag was met by Hakan Sukur. The Turkish international scored on his first start for the Gialloblu since his mid-season move from Inter.

Francesco Guidolins men fought back with real passion as two costly errors on set-pieces had given away goals against the run of play. Azzurri hopeful Matteo Brighi would have pulled one back immediately but his shot was accidentally cleared off the line by teammate Fabio Pecchia.

There was another setback for the Rossoblu when Renato Olive was stretchered off following a bad fall. Hospital tests have diagnosed compression of the spine, but it is not thought to be a serious injury. The absence of this key midfielder inevitably slowed down Bolognas approach play and Gianluca Pagliuca was forced into fine saves on Marco Di Vaio and Sukurs counter-attacks.

At the dawn of the second half the visitors re-opened the match. Sebastien Frey parried a powerful Julio Cruz header but could do nothing on Pecchias follow-up. Bologna laid siege to the Parma goalmouth but the French keeper proved unbeatable on Luigi Della Rocca, Giulio Falcone and a last-minute piledriver from Brighi.

There was a controversial finale as Brighi and Di Vaio seemed to engage in a perfectly normal clash in midfield, but the referee opted to send the Bologna midfielder for an early shower.

Guidolin's comments on the red card of Matteo :

"I really dont understand why Brighi was sent off. It seems exaggerated and if anything the foul was Marco Di Vaios. The real problem from this defeat is in the players who will miss the next tie due to suspension and injury."
