At the start of this season this would be considered a relegation dogfight, but with ten games to go it remains a battle for Champions' League places as Bologna are clear in fourth place thanks to this heartstopping winner.
While Massimo Oddo's crosses were a constant danger for the Rossoblu defence, Bologna had the better of the first half. The absence of thoroughbred strikers such as Beppe Signori made itself felt as several players - Julio Cruz, Fabio Pecchia and Lamberto Zauli - opted to provide an assist when it might have been wiser to head for goal.
When Massimo Tarantino did get a shot on target, 'keeper Fabrizio Ferron did well to punch out his fierce effort. Pecchia did hit the back of the net just before the break but his goal was rightly ruled out for offside.
In the second half Verona increased the pressure with a crucial save required on Emiliano Salvettis rising shot. The deadlock was eventually broken from a set-piece as Alberto Gilardino was at full stretch to toe-poke in a corner kick.
Signori made his comeback after five months out injured and set up the equaliser just seconds after stepping onto the field. It was his corner that allowed Salvatore Fresi to tap in from close range and re-open the match.
Deep into stoppage time Julio Cruz, who has been criticised in recent months, netted a fine winner by volleying in a corner kick.
